Holland High School Students Begin Global Issues Class

It is time to start up the Holland High School Global Issues Class for the 2009-2010 school year.  This program has been a part of the Holland ISD Curriculum since 1997 with students and adults studying an issue and culminating the year-long enrichment with an educational trip.  Previous travels included Belize, Central America, Yellowstone National Park, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

Next year we will be traveling to New York City during the spring.  Lori Kinard and Laura Wiley will teach the class that meets each week.  The program will delve into the richness of the American Culture.

Mrs. Gunn and Mrs. Cearley will organize the fundraisers and keep up with each individual’s financial account.  Every student must raise enough money to attend this trip.  Each month organized fund raisers are completed, but students will need to take the initiative to raise additional money.  During this time of financial concern, we need to begin fundraising much earlier.  Two years ago, each student needed to raise $1000 for the trip to New York.  The trip to New York in 2009-2010 will cost at least $1300.  The specific amount has not been determined, but will be finalized by August 2009.

All students currently in grades eight through eleven are eligible to participate in this class.  Classes will meet at 7:00am on Friday morning beginning next school year.  Students will be expected to attend 90% of the classes and participate in the assigned activities.

The first meeting will be on Friday, January 16, 2009 during High School Activity Period with an informational exchange about possible fund raisers and expectations for the class.  Please call Mrs. Gunn at 657-0175 for additional information.
